Christmas
Give the most beautiful gift of Christmas – flowers that brighten up the home.
Order flowersMade up by a florist in Karratha and delivered Monday to Saturday across town and out to Dampier. Order by 2pm on a weekday or 10am on Saturday, Western Australian time, and it goes out the same day.
Karratha is a long way from anywhere: 1,575 kilometres north of Perth on Nickol Bay, built in 1968 to house the people who ship the Pilbara's iron ore, salt and gas. The 2021 census counted 17,013 residents in town and 22,199 across the City of Karratha, many of them on rosters, which is why so many bouquets sent here are ordered from Perth or the east coast by someone at the other end of a swing. A florist in Karratha makes the flowers up on the day and delivers them by hand.
Karratha is compact, and every residential suburb is on the normal run: Bulgarra and Pegs Creek near the town centre, Millars Well, Nickol and the newer streets of Baynton to the west, plus the small Gap Ridge estate on the way out of town. Dampier, 19 kilometres away on the coast, is covered as well. Roebourne, Wickham and Point Samson lie 38 kilometres or more to the east and are served when the run allows, so order early in the day and expect delivery later in the afternoon. For a unit or a house behind a cyclone-rated fence, give the recipient's mobile number; drivers will not leave flowers in 40-degree shade.
Western Australia keeps the same time all year and does not use daylight saving. Same-day delivery runs Monday to Saturday when the order is in by 2pm on a weekday or 10am on Saturday, Karratha time. For anyone ordering from the east that is good news: 2pm in Karratha is 4pm in Brisbane all year, 4pm in Sydney, Melbourne and Hobart from April to October and 5pm there in summer. From Adelaide it is 3:30pm in winter and 4:30pm in summer, from Darwin 3:30pm year round. The Saturday cut-off of 10am Karratha time is midday or 1pm on the east coast. Sundays are not delivery days, so a Sunday birthday is covered on the Saturday.
Karratha Health Campus opened in 2018 and is the hospital for the whole western Pilbara; it stands on Balmoral Road in Pegs Creek, with a smaller hospital in Roebourne. Ring the ward before ordering: intensive care and some wards take no fresh flowers at all, and air-conditioned wards are kind to blooms but not to pot plants. Put the patient's full name and the ward on the order, and if the patient is likely to be flown to Perth for treatment, send the flowers to the family home in Karratha instead.
Karratha has a hot desert climate. The mean maximum is 32.6 degrees, the town's record is 48.4 degrees set on 13 January 2022, and the 292 millimetres of yearly rain falls mostly in late summer, in cyclone season. Almost every stem is flown or trucked in, so hardy varieties travel best: chrysanthemums, carnations, alstroemeria, orchids, anthuriums and native proteas, banksia and leucadendron. Lilies and roses are fine for an air-conditioned room; for an outdoor handover at a work site, ask for natives, and between December and March choose a morning workplace delivery over a letterbox at midday.
Karratha's own festival is FeNaClNG, named for iron, salt and natural gas and run since 1972 by the local Lions Club at Bulgarra Oval; in 2027 it falls on 31 July and 1 August, its 55th year. The Red Earth Arts Festival ran from 14 to 17 May in 2026 and returns in 2027, and the Cossack Art Awards fill the bluestone buildings of old Cossack with some 300 works each July and August. The flower dates are the national ones: Valentine's Day on 14 February, in the hottest month, so choose a workplace delivery; Mother's Day on Sunday 9 May 2027, delivered on Saturday 8 May with a 10am cut-off; Father's Day on 5 September 2027; and Anzac Day on 25 April, when a sprig of rosemary is worn and wreaths are laid at the dawn service, so order a wreath a few days ahead rather than a bouquet.
Karratha Cemetery lies on the corner of Dampier Highway and Madigan Road. Funeral tributes such as a casket spray, wreath or sheaf are best arranged two or three days ahead through the funeral director or a florist; because delivery to the service itself is never guaranteed, give the family's home as a second address. Many Pilbara families fly a loved one home for the funeral, in which case a sympathy bouquet to the house in Karratha, sent in the weeks afterwards, is often the gesture that lands best.
A hand-tied bouquet from a Karratha florist starts at AUD 75. Native bunches and large arrangements cost more, the delivery fee for the suburb is added at checkout, and a card with your message is included.
Did you know? Did you know? Karratha takes its name from a local Aboriginal word meaning good country, and the town was only laid out in 1968 to house the iron ore, salt and gas workforce.
