Christmas
Give the most beautiful gift of Christmas – flowers that brighten up the home.
Order flowersDelivered Monday to Saturday by a Cairns florist to Manoora and the suburbs around it. Ordered by 2pm on a weekday or 10am on Saturday, Queensland time, it arrives the same day.
Manoora is a compact residential suburb 4 km west of the Cairns city centre: 2.2 square kilometres of houses and unit blocks with 6,175 residents at the 2021 census. It was carved out of Parramatta Park and West Cairns in 1975 and named after HMAS Manoora, a passenger ship built in Scotland in 1935 that called at Cairns regularly before the Navy took it over in the Second World War. Piccones Village on Pease Street is the local shopping centre, the Cairns Indigenous Art Centre sits at 1 Jensen Street, and Cairns Hospital is a ten-minute drive away on the Esplanade.
Manoora is delivered together with its neighbours Manunda, Mooroobool, Edge Hill, Whitfield and Kanimbla, and with Brinsmead and Redlynch further out towards the Freshwater valley. Much of Manoora is unit blocks and townhouse complexes, so include the unit number, the recipient's mobile number and any gate or intercom details; a driver who cannot get an answer will try the number before leaving. Holy Spirit College on Moignard Street and the schools in Manunda and Edge Hill are awkward delivery addresses during the school day, so send to the home instead.
Order before 2pm Monday to Friday or before 10am on Saturday, Cairns time, and the flowers go out that day; there are no Sunday deliveries. Queensland keeps standard time all year, so if you are ordering from Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra or Hobart between October and April you have an extra hour: the 2pm Cairns cut-off is 3pm on your clock and the Saturday cut-off is 11am. From Adelaide it is 2.30pm in summer and 1.30pm in winter, and from Perth noon all year. Anything ordered after that is delivered on the next working day, or on whichever date you nominate.
Cairns Hospital is at 165 The Esplanade, Cairns 4870, the tertiary hospital for Far North Queensland with 531 beds, intensive care and eleven operating theatres since its 2015 redevelopment. Cairns Private Hospital is on Upward Street in Cairns North, a few blocks away. Ring the ward before you order: intensive care and some wards take no fresh flowers, and maternity prefers a small arrangement. Give the patient's full name and the ward, and the family home as a second address if discharge is near.
The Cairns Showgrounds, on the corner of Severin Street and Mulgrave Road, are a short walk from Manoora, and the Cairns Show runs there from 14 to 16 July 2027, with the Friday a local public holiday (in 2026 it fell on 17 July). Cairns Festival follows at the end of the dry season, from 27 August to 5 September 2027, with its hub on the Esplanade and events at Munro Martin Parklands and the Tanks Arts Centre in Edge Hill. Mother's Day is Sunday 9 May 2027, delivered on Saturday 8 May with a 10am cut-off, and Father's Day is 5 September 2027, the festival's closing day. Valentine's Day on 14 February arrives in the middle of the wet season, so roses should go to an air-conditioned office or a home where someone is in. Anzac Day on 25 April calls for a sprig of rosemary and a wreath at the dawn service, not a bouquet.
Cairns has a tropical monsoon climate with just under 2,000 mm of rain a year, most of it between November and May, and mean maximums from 26.2 degrees in July to 31.7 in January. In the wet, soft stems wilt fast; orchids, anthuriums, gloriosa lilies and gerberas are the florist's friends from December to April. The dry season from June to October is when roses, lisianthus, chrysanthemums and even tulips and ranunculus arrive from the south and last well. Native proteas and leucadendron come in from March to May. Ask for a seasonal tropical bouquet and the florist chooses the stems that will cope with that week's humidity.
Cairns Cemetery, better known as the Martyn Street Cemetery, lies in the northern part of neighbouring Manunda, a few minutes from Manoora. The Cairns Crematorium Funeral Home and Memorial Gardens is at 79-85 Foster Road, Mount Sheridan, on the southern side of the city. Order wreaths, sheaves and casket sprays two or three days ahead through the funeral director or a florist near the chapel; delivery to the service itself is never guaranteed, so give the family's home as a second address.
Bouquets to Manoora start at AUD 75, the delivery fee is shown at checkout and the card message is included.
Did you know? Did you know? Manoora was created in 1975 and named after HMAS Manoora, a Scottish-built passenger ship of 1935 that was a regular visitor to Cairns before serving with the Royal Australian Navy in the Second World War.
