Christmas
Give the most beautiful gift of Christmas – flowers that brighten up the home.
Order flowersDelivered Monday to Saturday by a Hunter Valley florist to Kurri Kurri, Weston, Abermain and Heddon Greta. Order by 2pm on a weekday or 10am on Saturday, New South Wales time, for same-day delivery.
Kurri Kurri is the main town of the old Hunter coalfields, 34 km north-west of Newcastle, 13 km south of Maitland and 14 km east of Cessnock. It was proclaimed on 25 October 1902 to serve the Stanford Merthyr and Pelaw Main collieries, and when the last pits closed between 1957 and 1967 an aluminium smelter took over as the big employer until 2012. Today the town proper has 6,174 residents and the built-up area, taking in Weston, Abermain, Heddon Greta, Pelaw Main and Stanford Merthyr, just over 20,000 (2021 census). More than 55 murals on the shopfronts tell that history, and the town has produced more rugby league internationals than any other bush town in Australia. A Hunter florist makes up your bouquet and brings it to the door.
Kurri Kurri itself, Weston (4,088 people), Abermain, Heddon Greta, Pelaw Main, Stanford Merthyr and Loxford are all on the run. Maitland and Cessnock can be reached from the same district, though they take longer. For a rural block, add the property name and a mobile number so the driver can ring if the gate is locked, and say whether the flowers can be left on the verandah if nobody answers.
Order before 2pm on a weekday or before 10am on a Saturday, New South Wales time, and the flowers are delivered that day, Monday to Saturday. Sundays are not a delivery day. If you are ordering from Queensland between October and April, remember that New South Wales is an hour ahead: the 2pm Kurri Kurri cut-off is 1pm in Brisbane. From Adelaide it is 1.30pm all year, and from Perth 11am in summer and noon in winter. Anything ordered after the cut-off is delivered the next working day, or on any date you choose.
Kurri Kurri Hospital is at 434 Lang Street, Kurri Kurri 2327, with emergency care, inpatient beds and rehabilitation. The new Maitland Hospital at 51 Metford Road, Metford 2323 handles maternity, surgery and the more serious cases, and the sickest patients go on to John Hunter Hospital in Newcastle. Ring the ward before ordering: intensive care and some wards take no fresh flowers, and rehabilitation stays can end at short notice. Give the patient's full name and the ward, and if the patient is likely to go home within a day or two, send the flowers to the house.
Wreaths, sheaves and casket sprays for a service in Kurri Kurri or Cessnock are ordered two or three days ahead through the funeral director or a local florist, who will know which chapel and cemetery the family has chosen. Delivery to the service itself is never guaranteed, so always give the family's home as a second address. A sympathy bouquet to the home can go the day you hear the news or a few weeks later, when the house has gone quiet and a kind gesture is noticed most.
The Kurri Kurri Nostalgia Festival, presented by Cessnock City Council, turns the main street into the 1950s and 60s with rock 'n' roll, hot rods, retro markets and a parade; the next one is 19 to 21 March 2027. Mulletfest, the town's tongue-in-cheek haircut festival, draws a crowd of its own. Valentine's Day on 14 February comes in the hottest stretch of the Hunter summer, so send roses to a home or office where they can go straight into water. Anzac Day on 25 April is marked with rosemary and wreaths rather than bouquets. Mother's Day is Sunday 9 May 2027: flowers are delivered on Saturday 8 May with a 10am cut-off. Father's Day follows on 5 September 2027.
The nearest weather station, Cessnock Airport, records a humid subtropical climate with an average high of 24.4 degrees, a low of 10.7, summers that have reached 46.8 degrees and dry winters with frosty nights. In autumn (March to May) that means dahlias, chrysanthemums, proteas and tulips; winter brings stock, daffodils, hyacinths and native leucadendron; spring is peony, snapdragon and rose season; and in summer alstroemeria, gerberas, carnations and orchids outlast softer stems. Ask for a seasonal bouquet and the florist chooses what is freshest that morning.
Hand-tied bouquets start at AUD 75; the delivery fee is added at checkout and a card message is included.
Did you know? Did you know? Kurri Kurri, proclaimed on 25 October 1902, was the first town in Australia to be fully planned on paper before anything was built, and its name comes from an Awabakal word meaning 'the very first'.
