Christmas
Give the most beautiful gift of Christmas – flowers that brighten up the home.
Order flowersDelivered by a Horsham florist Monday to Saturday, from the Wimmera River flats to Haven and Natimuk. Same-day delivery when you order by 2pm on a weekday or 10am on Saturday, Victorian time.
Horsham is the capital of the Wimmera, a wheat and wool city of 16,985 people (2021 census, including the surrounds) about 300 kilometres north-west of Melbourne on the floodplain of the Wimmera River. It is the Horsham in Victoria, not the one in West Sussex, which matters when you type the name into a search box from overseas. The town has botanic gardens laid out by William Guilfoyle, a base hospital serving much of western Victoria and a hinterland of farms with long driveways. A florist in Horsham makes the bouquet up fresh and drives it out the same day.
Delivery covers the whole of Horsham on both banks of the river, Haven just to the south with its 1,443 residents, and the smaller localities around town such as Riverside, Quantong, Dooen, Lower Norton and Longerenong, home of the agricultural college. Natimuk, 27 kilometres west under Mount Arapiles, is reached when the run allows and is usually a later-in-the-day delivery. Farms and stations are a normal part of a Wimmera florist's week: give the property name, the road and a mobile number, and say whether the gate is locked. For the grains research centre, the hospital or a school, add the department or house so the flowers get past the front desk.
Same-day delivery runs Monday to Saturday when the order is placed before 2pm on a weekday or 10am on Saturday, Victorian time; Sundays are not delivery days. Plenty of orders for Horsham come from South Australia, which runs half an hour behind all year: the 2pm Horsham cut-off is 1:30pm in Adelaide. From Brisbane it is 2pm in winter but 1pm from October to April, when Victoria is on daylight saving and Queensland is not. From Perth it is midday in winter and 11am in summer. Later orders go out the next working day or on the date you choose.
Wimmera Base Hospital, now run by Grampians Health, is at 83 Baillie Street in the centre of Horsham and takes patients from across the Wimmera and the Mallee. Ring the ward before you order: intensive care and some wards accept no fresh flowers, and a small arrangement in its own water is easier for staff than a tall vase. Put the patient's full name and the ward on the order. Serious cases are often transferred to Ballarat or Melbourne, so if that is likely, send the flowers to the home in Horsham instead.
The Horsham Show is held each September at Maydale Reserve on the showgrounds, followed by the horse show in October, and the Kannamaroo Festival is the town's own street celebration. Out at Natimuk, the Nati Frinj arts festival takes over the first weekend of November in odd-numbered years and the Goatfest climbing film festival runs at Easter. For flowers, the big dates are Mother's Day on Sunday 9 May 2027, delivered on Saturday 8 May with a 10am cut-off, Father's Day on 5 September 2027, and Valentine's Day on 14 February, which can be a 40-degree day here, so have roses delivered to a workplace or early to the house. On Anzac Day, 25 April, the Wimmera wears rosemary and lays wreaths at dawn services; order a wreath a few days ahead rather than a bouquet.
Horsham has a cold semi-arid climate: only 379 millimetres of rain a year, January days averaging about 31 degrees and July days 13.6, with frosty winter mornings on the flat. Summer bouquets should lean on stems that cope with dry heat, such as chrysanthemums, carnations, alstroemeria, lisianthus and natives like proteas, banksia and leucadendron; keep lilies and hydrangea for air-conditioned rooms. Autumn (March to May) brings dahlias, chrysanthemums and the first proteas, winter (June to August) daffodils, ranunculus, hellebores and native kangaroo paw, and spring (September to November) sweet pea, freesia, stock and peonies in November, with the Wimmera's paddocks turning yellow at the same time. A seasonal bouquet lets the florist choose what is freshest.
Horsham Cemetery is on Davis Drive, and services are held there and in the town's churches and funeral chapels. Order a casket spray, wreath or sheaf two or three days ahead through the funeral director or a florist; delivery to the service itself is never guaranteed, so give the family's home as a second address. A sympathy bouquet to the house, sent a week or two after the funeral when the farm has gone quiet again, is often the kindest timing.
Hand-tied bouquets start at AUD 75, with roses by the dozen, native bunches and larger arrangements priced above that. The delivery fee for the address is added at checkout, and a card carrying your message is included.
Did you know? Did you know? Horsham's Botanic Gardens were designed by William Guilfoyle, the man behind Melbourne's Royal Botanic Gardens, and the town was named Australia's Tidiest Town in 2001.
