Christmas
Give the most beautiful gift of Christmas – flowers that brighten up the home.
Order flowersGeelong sits on Corio Bay about 75 km south-west of Melbourne, and the same-day cut-off is calculated in the recipient's time zone. Here is what to know about suburbs, hospitals and timing before you order.
Geelong is a port city at the western end of Corio Bay, on the left bank of the Barwon River, roughly 75 km south-west of Melbourne. Greater Geelong is Victoria's second-largest city, with an estimated 282,809 residents in 2023, and the council area stretches well beyond the centre to take in the Bellarine Peninsula, the Barrabool Hills and the plains around Lara. When you send flowers here, it helps to know which part of that spread-out map your recipient lives in.
The older heart of the city is around the waterfront, with Newtown and Geelong West on the rising ground behind. South of the Barwon River you reach Belmont, Highton and Grovedale, and major development in Belmont began in the 1920s after a new bridge crossed the river. Further south, Armstrong Creek is a newer growth area and Waurn Ponds has a large shopping centre and the Epworth hospital. Work the other way and you meet the industrial north: Corio, Norlane and North Shore.
East of the city the Bellarine Peninsula adds a second set of addresses, including Drysdale, Clifton Springs, Portarlington, Ocean Grove, Queenscliff and Point Lonsdale. Barwon Heads sits where the river meets the sea. These coastal towns are a drive from the city centre, so give the full street address and a mobile number for the recipient rather than just a suburb name.
The Geelong Botanic Gardens lie inside Eastern Park, set aside as public space in 1850, which makes them the fourth oldest botanic garden in Australia. Between Eastern Park and the bay you will find Eastern Beach, whose foreshore beautification and pool were finished in 1939. On the waterfront itself, the Carousel Pavilion houses a steam-driven carousel from around 1892, and more than a hundred painted timber bollards run along the Baywalk between Rippleside and Limeburners Point.
If you are choosing flowers for someone who loves the outdoors, these places are a good conversation starter. A posy of seasonal stems with a short note about a favourite walk along the bay often means more than a generic mixed bouquet.
Geelong has a temperate oceanic climate with dominant westerly winds. The average annual rainfall is around 525 mm, which makes it one of the driest cities in Australia because the Otway Ranges cast a rain shadow, although the southernmost suburbs can receive around 700 mm. Summers are mild to warm but can turn very hot, and the recorded high is 47.4 degrees Celsius.
On a hot day, flowers sitting in a car or on a doorstep for hours will struggle. If your recipient works in the city, a workplace delivery is often the safer choice in January and February, since someone can put the stems into water straight away.
The main public hospital is University Hospital Geelong on Ryrie Street, run by Barwon Health, which operates 21 health sites across the region and also runs the McKellar Centre on Ballarat Road. The largest private hospital is St John of God on Myers Street, and Epworth has a hospital at Waurn Ponds.
Before ordering, ring the ward and ask whether flowers are accepted, because some units, such as intensive care, do not take them. Give the patient's full name and the ward, and keep the arrangement small enough to sit on a bedside locker. If the patient is likely to go home in a day or two, sending to their home address a little later can be kinder.
Order before 2pm on weekdays or 10am on Saturday, in the recipient's time zone, for same-day delivery. There is no delivery on Sundays, so for a Sunday birthday or a weekend funeral service, aim for Friday or Saturday. Mother's Day falls on the second Sunday in May, so for that weekend plan for Friday delivery.
Spring runs from September to November in Victoria, which is when seasonal flowers are at their freshest, and Father's Day falls on the first Sunday in September, a good reason to send something more than a card.
For a funeral, ask the family or the funeral director where to send the flowers and whether the family has requested donations instead. Death notices in the local paper usually state the family's preference. If the service has no flowers, a delivery to the family home a few days later, with a handwritten card, is a quiet way to show you care.
Keep sympathy arrangements soft in colour, such as white lilies, roses and greenery, and include your full name on the card so the family knows who to thank.
Include a street number, unit number, the nearest cross street if the property is hard to find, and a phone number for the recipient. In growing areas such as Armstrong Creek, a clear address saves the driver time. Add a short message that mentions the occasion, and consider including the sender's mobile number in case of a missed delivery.
