Christmas
Give the most beautiful gift of Christmas – flowers that brighten up the home.
Order flowersA Launceston florist hand-ties the bouquet and delivers it Monday to Saturday on both sides of the Tamar. Order by 2pm on a weekday or 10am on Saturday, Tasmanian time, for same-day delivery.
Launceston is Tasmania's second city, 90,953 people at the 2021 census, built where the North Esk and South Esk meet to form the Tamar, or kanamaluka, 201 kilometres north of Hobart. It was the first Australian city lit by hydroelectricity, has the largest regional museum in the country and a gorge with a chairlift ten minutes from the mall. It also has a proper winter, with 61 frosty mornings a year and the most fog-bound airport in Australia, which is worth knowing if you are flying flowers in. We do not; a florist in Launceston makes the bouquet up that morning and delivers it by hand.
The inner run takes in the city centre, East Launceston, West Launceston, South Launceston, Newstead and, across the North Esk, Invermay and Inveresk with the university campus. North along the river come Mowbray, Newnham, Mayfield, Rocherlea and Ravenswood, with Waverley and St Leonards to the east. To the south the run covers Kings Meadows, Punchbowl, Norwood, Youngtown, Summerhill, Prospect and Prospect Vale, and on the west bank Trevallyn, Riverside and Blackstone Heights. Legana, 12 kilometres down the West Tamar Highway among the vineyards, and Hadspen, eight kilometres south-west, are covered too, though they may be delivered later in the day. For a unit in the old warehouses around Inveresk or a steep street in Trevallyn, add a mobile number so the driver can be let in.
Same-day delivery runs Monday to Saturday for orders placed before 2pm on a weekday or 10am on Saturday, Tasmanian time. There is no Sunday delivery, so a Sunday occasion is covered on the Saturday. Tasmania changes its clocks on the first Sunday of October and the first Sunday of April, together with Victoria, New South Wales and the ACT, so orders from Melbourne or Sydney face the same deadline. From Brisbane the cut-off is 2pm in winter but 1pm in summer, because Queensland stays on standard time. From Adelaide it is 1:30pm all year, from Perth midday in winter and 11am in summer. Later orders are delivered the next working day or on the date you pick.
The Launceston General Hospital, founded in 1863 and today a 308-bed teaching hospital, is at 280 Charles Street on the southern edge of the city centre. St Vincent's Hospital, the private hospital, is a short walk away at 5 Frederick Street. Ring the ward before you order: intensive care and some wards take no fresh flowers, and the maternity unit prefers something small enough for a bedside locker. Put the patient's full name and the ward on the order. If the stay is nearly over, the family home in Newstead or Riverside is the safer address.
Launceston's year opens with Festivale, three days of food, wine and music in City Park, from 29 to 31 January in 2027. Agfest, the state's big field days, draws up to 70,000 people to Quercus Park at Carrick in early May, just before Mother's Day. The north of the state has its own public holiday, Recreation Day, on the first Monday in November: 2 November 2026 and 1 November 2027, a day when nothing is delivered, so send Monday flowers on the Friday or Tuesday. Mother's Day is Sunday 9 May 2027, delivered on Saturday 8 May with a 10am cut-off. Father's Day is 5 September 2027, when the first blossom is out along the Tamar. Valentine's Day on 14 February is mild in Launceston, so roses last well. On Anzac Day, 25 April, Tasmanians wear a sprig of rosemary and lay wreaths at the dawn service; order a wreath a few days ahead rather than a bouquet.
Launceston's summers top out around 24 degrees on average and July nights sit near two degrees, with a record low of minus 5.2 and 665 millimetres of rain spread across the year. Spring arrives late: Tasmania's tulip fields at Table Cape near Wynyard flower from late September to the end of October, weeks after the mainland, and peonies follow in November. Summer (December to February) brings roses, lilies, delphinium, hydrangea and sweet pea that would wilt in Brisbane. Autumn (March to May) is dahlia and chrysanthemum season, with the Tamar Valley's poplars and vines turning gold. Winter (June to August) means hellebores, daffodils, ranunculus and natives such as banksia and leucadendron. Choose a seasonal bouquet and the florist picks what came in freshest that morning.
Most Launceston funerals end at Carr Villa Memorial Park, the city council's cemetery and crematorium at 36 Nunamina Avenue, Kings Meadows, which has its own chapels. Casket sprays, wreaths and sheaves for a service are ordered two or three days ahead through the funeral director or a florist; delivery to the service itself is never guaranteed, so give the family's home as a second address. A sympathy bouquet to the house can be sent the day you hear or a few weeks later, when the kitchen bench has emptied of casseroles.
Hand-tied bouquets from a Launceston florist start at AUD 75, with roses by the dozen, native bunches and larger arrangements priced above that. The delivery fee depends on the suburb and is added at checkout, and a card with your message is included with every order.
Did you know? Did you know? Launceston was the first Australian city lit by hydroelectricity, and the chairlift across Cataract Gorge, at 308 metres, is the longest single span in the world.
