Christmas
Give the most beautiful gift of Christmas – flowers that brighten up the home.
Order flowersDelivered by a Gladstone florist Monday to Saturday, from the harbour suburbs to Boyne Island and Tannum Sands. Order by 2pm on a weekday or 10am on Saturday, Queensland time, and it arrives the same day.
Gladstone is an industrial harbour city of about 45,000 people (2021 census) on the Central Queensland coast, 517 km north-west of Brisbane and 108 km south-east of Rockhampton, on the country of the Gooreng Gooreng, Toolooa, Meerooni and Baiali peoples. Its port is Queensland's largest multi-commodity port and one of the world's biggest coal terminals; the alumina refineries, the Boyne Island smelter and the LNG plants on Curtis Island employ a large shift-working population, and a florist here is used to delivering around a roster rather than a nine-to-five.
Gladstone Central, Barney Point and Callemondah around the harbour, the big residential suburbs of Kin Kora, Clinton, New Auckland, Telina, Kirkwood, Glen Eden, Sun Valley, South Gladstone and West Gladstone, and Calliope and Benaraby to the south-west are all covered. Boyne Island and Tannum Sands, the twin towns 25 km south at the mouth of the Boyne River, are on the run too; order in the morning if you want an afternoon delivery there. Flowers cannot be taken onto Curtis Island, the port or the plant sites, so for someone on shift use the home address and add a mobile number so the driver can ring rather than knock on a house where someone is sleeping off a night shift. For an acreage block, give the property name as well as the number.
Order before 2pm Monday to Friday or before 10am on Saturday, Gladstone time, for same-day delivery; nothing goes out on a Sunday. Queensland does not use daylight saving, and that works in your favour if you are ordering from the south: from October to April Sydney, Melbourne, Canberra and Hobart are an hour ahead, so the 2pm Gladstone cut-off is 3pm on your clock and the Saturday cut-off is 11am. From Adelaide it is 2.30pm in summer and 1.30pm in winter; from Perth it is noon all year. Later orders go out the next working day or on the date you nominate.
Gladstone Hospital, run by Central Queensland Health, is the city's public hospital in West Gladstone. The former Mater private hospital at 50 Rossella Street was bought by Queensland Health in 2020 and is now the hospital's West Wing, so there is no longer a separate private hospital in town. Ring the ward before ordering, because intensive care and some wards take no fresh flowers, and give the patient's full name and the ward. Patients needing specialist care are often moved to Rockhampton, so check before you send and use the family home as a second address.
Gladstone Regional Council runs four cemeteries. Gladstone Cemetery, on the corner of the Dawson Highway and Cemetery Road in West Gladstone, is closed to new grave purchases and used only for reserved sites, so most new burials and all cremations go to Boyne Tannum Memorial Parklands on Pioneer Drive, Boyne Island, which has had the region's crematorium and chapel since 2007 and is open 8am to 6pm on weekdays and from 10am at weekends. Calliope Cemetery is at 60 Morcom Street and Mount Larcom Cemetery at 47 Popenia Road. Service tributes are arranged through the funeral director or a florist two or three days ahead; delivery to the service itself is never guaranteed, so give the family's home as a second address.
Gladstone's year turns on Easter. The Gladstone Harbour Festival, held since 1963 at the GPC Marina Parklands, runs from 25 to 28 March 2027 and ends with the finish of the Brisbane to Gladstone yacht race, which starts on Good Friday. The Boyne Tannum HookUp fishing competition at Bray Park follows on the May Labour Day long weekend, drawing more than 3,000 entrants, and Mother's Day comes straight after it on Sunday 9 May 2027; flowers go out on Saturday 8 May with a 10am cut-off. Valentine's Day on 14 February lands in the wet season, so roses should go to an air-conditioned office or a home where someone is in. Anzac Day on 25 April is marked with rosemary and wreaths, not bouquets, and Father's Day is 5 September 2027.
Gladstone has a tropical savannah climate, with a mean maximum of 27.7 degrees, a mean minimum of 18.5 and about 880 mm of rain, most of it between October and March. Heat and humidity shorten the life of soft European flowers in summer, so from December to February the reliable choices are orchids, anthuriums, gerberas, gladioli and native stems. The dry winter from June to August is the best season for delicate stems: ranunculus, tulips, chrysanthemums and iris all travel well then. March to May is protea and leucadendron time, and in October and November there is a short peony window alongside lisianthus and sweet pea. Ask for a seasonal bouquet and the florist picks the stems that will last longest in that week's weather.
A bouquet to Gladstone costs from AUD 75; the delivery fee is added when you check out and the card message is part of the price.
Did you know? Did you know? Gladstone's Harbour Festival has been held every Easter since 1963 and finishes with the Brisbane to Gladstone yacht race, which starts on Good Friday and sails into the harbour over the weekend.
