Magnolia – Pink – Guide & Ordering

Pink magnolias give you big goblets of colour on bare branches in late winter. See which pinks suit small gardens, how to plant them and how to protect them from frost.

Pink is the best-known colour for magnolia trees in Australia. The saucer magnolia (Magnolia x soulangeana) has white petals flushed pink to purple on the outside, and it bursts into flower on bare branches in late winter. Other pinks include Magnolia campbellii, a tall tree with large rose-pink bowls, and hybrids with a clearer, brighter pink.

For every size of garden

  • Star magnolia and its pink forms stay compact and suit a courtyard.
  • Soulangeana varieties form a rounded tree of 4 to 6 metres, ideal as a feature.
  • Magnolia campbellii and its hybrids grow into large trees and need space and shelter.

Getting a tree established

Plant in autumn or early spring, in rich, slightly acid soil that holds moisture but drains well. Mulch to keep roots cool, and avoid digging around the base. Container-grown plants establish more easily than bare-rooted ones. Water deeply in dry spells, especially in the first two summers.

When a late frost strikes

An early spring frost can scorch opening blooms, turning petals brown. This matters in Canberra, Ballarat, the highlands and Tasmania, but less on the warm east coast. Late-flowering pinks and a position out of the morning sun reduce the risk.

Fallen petals underfoot

Spent petals drop in a soft carpet in early spring. The ASPCA lists southern magnolia as non-toxic to dogs and cats, so petals are not a poisoning concern, although a big mouthful of any plant can upset an animal's stomach. Call your vet if you are worried.
